The gathering will start with Evening Prayer and include a discussion of future plans and a presentation by an ARS artist on his/her artistic process. The latter is something we hope to do on a regular basis.
... throughout 2,000 years of Christian history, sacred art ... has been used to instruct the faithful. Pope John Paul II ... writes, "In a sense, art is a kind of visual Gospel, a concrete mode of catechesis." I think what he's saying is that the truths of faith that we profess in the Creed every Sunday also take the form of the beautiful.
When we think of truth, we usually think of that which appeals to the intellect; we think of words, lines on a page or a catechism in written form. But the Holy Father is saying that the truths of the faith also take complementary forms of expression, and that is what sacred and religious art is all about.

]]>The piece was part of the fall 2002 Cultural Center exhibit Visions of One Another, which featured original sculptures on biblical theme and figures from the Old Testament by Catholic and Jewish sculptors.
The participating artists were invited to travel the exhibit to the Pontifical Gregorian University in October 2004 to coincide with a symposium to mark the 40th anniversary of the Second Vatican Council's document Nostra Aetate (Declaration on the Relation of the Church to Non-Christian Religions), that was proclaimed by His Holiness, Pope Paul VI, on October 28, 1965.

]]>In anticipation of the coming Year of the Eucharist proclaimed by Pope John Paul II, the lecture is titled The Eucharist: Images in Art History, and it will be presented by popular Smithsonian lecturer and art historian Judy Scott Feldman, Ph.D. The lecture, sponsored by ARS: Artists for a Renewed Society, is free and open to the public. Free parking is available and light refreshments will be served afterward.
Judy Feldman received her doctorate in art history from the University of Texas at Austin. She is a former assistant professor of art history at American University, Washington, DC. A frequent and popular lecturer, Dr. Feldman has taught courses on Washington art and architecture. She also teaches courses on sacred spaces and medieval art for the Smithsonian. She is actively involved in local and national arts, historic preservation, and community development organizations.
ARS is a Catholic organization that promotes the arts and assists artists through personal, professional, and spiritual support and formation.

Dr. Linda Seger is the author of five popular books on screenwriting and filmmaking, including Making a Good Script Great, Creating Unforgettable Characters, and The Art of Adaptation: Turning Fact and Fiction into Film. She created and defined the job of script consultant in 1981, and since that time has consulted on more than 2,000 film and television scripts and presented seminars for ABC, CBS, NBC, Disney, Turner Network, the Motion Picture Academy, the Directors Guild, the Writers Guild, the American Film Institute, UCLA, and USC, as well as for companies around the world.
Barbara Nicolosi is Executive Director of Act One Inc. She has been a director of development, a panelist for the National Endowment for the Arts, and a consultant on many film and television projects.
Tom Provost adapted the French Film Garde a Vue into the screenplay Under Suspicion, which was nominated for an Edgar Award. He has worked as an editor for independent films, television shows, and hundreds of promos for the WB and Bravo. He has worked as a television actor and had a recurring role on the first season of Steven Spielberg's SeaQuest DSV.

The title of the event is "ICONS AS LIVING PRAYERS," and the icons exhibited are the work of Mother Eliseea Filofteia, a Romanian iconographer and hermitess. Mother Eliseea's icons are exhibited throughout the world and an article describing her work appeared in the Washington Post.
